Resettlement and Integration Services

About the centre:

Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre provides temporary accommodation to newcomers as they begin the resettlement process in Calgary and asisting them in overcoming initial obstacles in adjusting to a new country. The center can accommodate up to 80 people.

MCRC-TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION FOR DESTINED GARS

Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre is a temporary accommodation facility where Government Assisted Refugees (GARS) who are destined to Calgary are brought from the airport and stay for up to 19 days until permanent accommodation is secured. The facility’s on-site amenities are:

  • Comfortable and safe rooms
  • Free public telephone
  • Public access computers
  • Dining hall
  • Children’s playground
  • Laundry facilities
  • TV/Playroom
  • Refugee Health Clinic

Services provided for destined GAR’s are:

  • Temporary accommodation
  • 3 meals a day 7 days a week
  • Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) services are provided from this facility to GAR’s.

Eligibilty:

  • GAR’s destined to Calgary

MCRC-TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR NEWCOMERS

MCRC also provides transitional housing for newcomers, other than GARs, by renting out 3     -one bedroom and 5-three bedroom self-contained and furnished apartments. This service is based on availability at the time of need. Apartments are NOT AVAILABLE FOR Government assisted refugees, or refugee who have transferred from another province or city

Eligibility:

  • Newly arrived independent immigrants to Canada (ND2’s, Skilled Workers)
  • Based on assessment and availability

Fee for Service:

  • Monthly rent

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • I am coming to Canada in 2 months can I book an apartment?
    • No, apartments are rented out on a first come first serve basis.
       
  • If I rent an apartment is food included?
    • No, the apartments are self-contained furnished apartments fully equipped with kitchens. You are responsible to buy and cook your own food.
       
  • If I am a Government Assisted Refugee (GAR) less than one year in Canada, moving from another city to Calgary, can I rent an apartment? 
    • No, GAR’s under assistance are not eligible to rent an apartment at MCRC.
